Marilyn Niccole Paul didn't find wig making. She grew up inside it.
Her mother was the Wardrobe Department Head at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C. — the theatre where President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated — for 38 years. Marilyn was there from two weeks old. By seven she was running wild backstage, so her mother boxed her in behind the office door with a mannequin head, a brush, rollers and pins. Within a year she was prepping wigs and hairpieces for live shows. By ten, she was responsible for them, and actors were requesting her by name. At twelve and a half, she made the theatre's payroll. (She told them she was thirteen.)
She tried to leave. She trained as a military medic and chased careers in medicine, but kept coming back to the theatre. Eventually she stopped fighting it.
After joining the hair and make-up union, Marilyn worked the major theatres around Washington, D.C., then Broadway productions in New York and feature films shot in the D.C. area. Working alongside top wig builders, costume designers and special effects make-up artists, she taught herself to build wigs and combined the best of all three worlds into her own construction method.
The name came from the industry itself. As high definition television arrived, producers started calling for wigs that could hold up under HD cameras. Marilyn's pieces could. High Definition Hair® sold its first wig in 2004 and was incorporated in 2005. Over the next two decades she developed a proprietary cap construction that eliminated the need for glue, tape, gel, adhesives, or bangs to conceal unnatural hairlines — innovations that have since redefined what a custom wig can be.
